Is Electronic medical record (EMR) a must for health service providers?

Electronic health record or Electronic medical record is nothing but a medical record of patient in digital format. EHR systems effectively coordinate the storage and retrieval of patient’s data.

EMR include Demographics of patient, laboratory test results, medication information, billing records, photographs, list of medicines etc.

EMR has many advantages over paper records. It improves the billing accuracy. With the adoption of EMR system, one can reduce the duplication of service. Everything related to patient will be digitalized and can be stored in less space. Retrieval of patient record is very easy. If it is the case of a conventional paper record, it's big time consuming process. EMR also gives the option of flexibility for the patient, to receive the health services at any of the branches of the service provider during the course of his treatment.

With EMR software, the initial cost may be high but over the course of time operating costs will be reduced. It also improves the efficiency of the firm. Electronic record keeping reduces the errors associated with handwritten documents.

When a health service provider would like to go for EMR adoption, it should consider the following points:

  • Information updation should be easy and continuous.
  • Statistical report generation should be possible based on the patient data captured.
  • The ability to exchange records between different electronic health records system.
